The UNBC men’s soccer team won’t be heading to Edmonton for Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) nationals.
Sunday in Surrey, the Vancouver Island University Mariners blanked the Northern Timberwolves 3-0 in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) provincial men’s soccer final. The Nanaimo-based Mariners will represent B.C. at the CCAA national tournament, hosted by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology from Nov. 10 to 13.
The Mariners led 1-0 at halftime and scored twice more in the final 45 minutes on Sunday. Kyle Bate scored two goals for Vancouver Island, with the other goal coming from Jared Stephens. Brant Losch was named the Player of the Game for the winners.
On the UNBC side, Sean Glanville was named Player of the Game in his final varsity soccer contest. The 26-year-old Williams Lake native played out his fifth and final year of CCAA eligibility this season.
The Timberwolves advanced to the gold-medal game after pulling off the upset of the season on Saturday, defeating the previously undefeated Douglas College Royals 2-1. The Royals entered the competition ranked first in the CCAA national rankings with a record of 10 wins, two ties and zero losses (10-2-0). UNBC, which defeated the Capilano University Blues 1-0 in Friday’s quarterfinal round, carried a 6-1-5 record into Surrey.
The Mariners, 8-2-1 in the regular season, were ranked sixth in the country. They defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 2-1 in penalty kicks in Saturday’s other semi-final.
The Royals defeated the WolfPack 2-1 in Sunday’s bronze medal game.
