Franco Kouagnia and Sidney Roy were recognized at this years male and female athlete of the year at the Timberwolves annual athletic banquet on Friday evening. The two graduating players helped make UNBC history in one way or another. The UNBC Timberwolves presented their year end awards on Friday night at the Hart Crown Banquet Hall. Four student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements within the department, with additional awards for athletic achievement within each team....

UNBC Community Care Centre not taking new clients

Funding woes at UNBC have forced its Community Care Centre to stop taking on new clients. The following was posted on its Facebook page yesterday: To all community partners and referring agencies: Due to funding constraints of the University, the UNBC Community Care Centre will need to stop providing intakes at this time. Our counselling of current clients will continue until June 30th. We are saddened and discouraged by this information, but we are working hard to find funding...

UNBC researchers look at gene splicing

Sometimes the biggest discovery is what isn’t there. “We were totally surprised that the U1 wasn’t there,” says UNBC Professor of Chemistry Dr. Stephen Rader. “U1 has always been found in other organisms.” U1 is a specific type of small nuclear ribonucleic acid (RNA), which Rader and his team of researchers found wasn’t in red algae. The group was looking for new ways to study gene splicing. “Red algae refers to the pigments in them, not the actual colour,” Rader says. “They are actually...

UNBC faculty dispute goes to binding artbitration

The labour dispute between the University of Northern B.C. and its faculty association is going to arbitration. Job action ended last week when the university applied to the Labour Relations Board for access to a specialized process, available only for negotiations on a first collective agreement. Labour Relations Board Mediator Trevor Sones has now recommended that the parties settle their outstanding issues via binding arbitration before a single arbitrator or the board. Today the parties...

UNBC students doing survey on impact of Canada Winter Games

Students from the University of Northern B.C. want to know what impacts people feel the 2015 Canada Winter Games had on Prince George. A political science class is conducting a survey this week at a number of locations around the city. “It should only take about five minutes,” project lead Grant Bachand says. “We’d like you to do the survey here, because it allows us to manage the survey better by keeping track of the survey.” The survey was scheduled to be...

Negotiations are key

Editor: An open letter to President Weeks and the UNBC Board of Governors I write you today with great concern over the current strike at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). From Ontario, I have kept abreast of the issues, negotiations and dialogue made public. Speaking as proud alumni of UNBC, I am deeply disappointed in the administration’s latest actions by responding to the media, rather than the UNBC Faculty Administration (UNBCFA) at bargaining tables. To me, your...

UNBC applies to Labour Relations Board, classes resume Friday

Classes at the University of Northern B.C. and its other campuses should be back to normal Friday morning. On Wednesday evening, the university applied to the Labour Relations Board for access to a specialized process, available only for negotiations on a first collective agreement. In a statement on the UNBC website, President Daniel Weeks said: “Either party may apply for access to this specialized process. One effect of such an application is to suspend any strike activity that may...

Get to the bargaining table

Editor: An open letter to UNBC President Daniel Weeks I am an alumnus of UNBC, having graduated in 2012 with an MA in Gender Studies, and I am very proud to have been accepted into the PhD (psychology) program at UNBC. I am also extremely privileged in that my PhD studies are supported by a UNBC graduate entrance scholarship as well as a very prestigious national scholarship. While I know that I am not unique in being inconvenienced by this strike, I will share some of the details of my...

Provincial underfunding of education is the problem

Editor: This is in response to the under-funding of education at all levels in B.C. No one in my family had completed a high school education. Due to violence in my family and poverty, I left home very early to waitress and live independently. At that time I had completed only Grade 8. A few years later I began adult upgrading – and eventually completed a doctorate. Through all of those years I waitressed and worked various jobs. Counselling, adult upgrading, caring college and...

Weeks sends letter to students

The following letter was sent by UNBC President Daniel Weeks to students this morning Dear students: I realize that the faculty strike is not of your doing, and that you carry the brunt of this action. Short of announcing that the strike is over, there is little I can say that will satisfy your expectations. Nevertheless, many students have requested a commitment from me regarding financial restitution. Last Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting with a group of seven passionate students,...
