What is the real truth behind our annual seal slaughter?

Whenever I see emails in my inbox from Humane Society International, I try not to open them. I know reading them is going to be painful. Brutal. Sometimes, I leave them until the end of the day so that I can be informed without being sick to my stomach. The issue is an emotional one for a lot of people. One that tugs at my heartstrings no matter how hard I try to turn the other way or how deep into the tar sands I bury my head. I pray that it will go away but prayer doesn’t always...

Pulling the plug on dental program would leave a bad taste

I feel like I’m in the dentist’s chair. Waiting in suspended silence with my dry mouth draped and dammed. I can’t talk. Every attempt to speak is blocked by warm black latex and muffled by the hiss of a suction tube. The anticipation is the worst part. I know this latest session is likely to put me in at least some pain no matter how much freezing goes into my gums or roof of my mouth. I’ve decided that I have sensitive teeth. Or maybe I’m just sensitive. The dentist is off in another...

Don’t go into journalism

I thought it was bad enough that for three years, the highly regarded Macleans magazine ranked Prince George as the number one most dangerous cities in Canada or, alternately, crime capital of Canada. Take your title pick. Either way, it’s not good. So imagine my horror Wednesday night when I found out on King 5 News that the number one worst job is none other than that of a newspaper reporter. Yes, there it was, in a slick colourful graphic, nicely presented, the results ...

Fashion flashback and a case of mistaken identity

You know you’ve lived too long when you see culottes come back into fashion. Culottes, also called Palazzo pants, or their shorter version, Gaucho pants, are once again all the rage with women, forcing me to relive – in my mind, not my wardrobe – my fun and fashion-fearless 70s. From modified Mods to Granny-style to Bohemian look, the boomers had it all covered, or not, depending on the neckline. As of this year, I’ve already come through a resurgence of the mini-skirt, tent dress, hot...

Time runs out for Target

Sonia Kashuk was just about the last one out the door Wednesday. Professional make-up artist to the stars and supermodels (like Cindy Crawford) Kashuk has her own line of lush cosmetics. Her products are widely featured in Target stores across the U.S. and Canada. Baskets piled high with Kashuk brand blush, eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish, facial cleansers and other beauty products still remained in the hours before Target closed its doors to the public at the Prince George location....

Fitting the description leaves driver nervous

Lesson learned. Read your own newspaper online before you leave the office. I could have been saved myself a lot of confusion, anxiety, angst and profuse sweating had I done that. First, just the facts. I was driving down 15th Avenue Wednesday morning, as usual driving carefully and minding my own business – this is my story so I can tell it the way I want to – on my way to a photo assignment at the PG Railway and Forestry Museum. As an astute reporter, I began to feel very uneasy. I...

Women and wings

I was there to support and uplift women’s burning of the bras demonstrations in the old wild West (Winnipeg) in the 1960s – long before I actually needed to wear one. So probably under the legislation being debated in Ottawa around Bill-C51, for short called the anti-terrorism bill, I may – because of my past “militant” history – fall into the too-big-a-net-for-my-liking classification of a person authorities need to watch and be wary of. The lawmakers who make revisions and the...

Small-town newspaper life resonates on film

It may have been the stage portrayal of Marie Antoinette during Theatre North West’s recent production of W.O. Mitchell’s The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon that brought it all to mind. Or perhaps it was a closed-session meeting of sweet-toothed councillors at City Hall. No matter, the decree has gone out throughout this northern town with due pomp and circumstance: Let them eat cake … with royal icing and lots of calories. In honour of Prince George’s 100th anniversary (March 6)...

Already going through Games withdrawal

The Canada Winter Games will be the talk of the town for a long time to come. And that is how it should be. It was a proud time for everyone involved including the athletes, their coaches, families and friends, spectators and cheering squads and thousands of local volunteers in green jackets who did it all, from making visitors to our city feel welcome – in our two official languages – sewing hems on Canadian flags, escorting mascots, directing traffic, taking tickets at sports venues and...

Time not on my side

It’s not only athletes who experience sports injuries. Just trying to madly jockey for position among all the local and out of town media out and about vying for the best spots at the various venues, I’m getting sore arms (from elbowing my competition out of the way) and a sore neck from straining and stretching it to see the action on the ice, snow and stage. It’s only Week One of the Canada Winter Games and I’m already having joint fatigue and dry mouth (OK, that’s from cheering on Team...
