Province funds CNC trades programs; no help for suspended dental programs

Just two days after the College of New Caledonia announced it will suspend student intakes for the dental assistant and dental hygiene programs, the province coughed up some money for institution. However, it won’t be for the ailing dental programs. On Monday, Victoria announced $330,496 for 64 trade seats to reduce wait times for students entering an in-demand trade profession. Funding will go towards the following programs: Electrical: 16 Foundation seats; millwright: 16 Foundatio...

CNC programs too valuable to disappear

Editor: We are writing this letter in regards to the impending abrupt closure of the Dental Studies Programs at the College of New Caledonia. We are strongly urging the President and the Board of Governors of CNC to reconsider the closure of the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs. Both of these programs represent jewels in the dental education community and are involved in serving the entire Northern half of the province with well-trained dental professionals. Closure will create...

CNC suspends dental program intakes, but offers ray of hope

Allan Wishart Free Press The dental assistant program at the College of New Caledonia may not skip a beat. While the school’s board of governors voted Friday morning to suspend student intakes for the dental assistant and dental hygiene programs to balance the 2015-16 budget, the recommendation from vice-president of administration and finance Sue McAllister contained a measure of hope, which president Henry Reiser elaborated on in discussions before the vote. “We have been in...

Keep CNC dental

Editor: Upon hearing about the decision to close the dental assisting and dental hygienist programs at CNC, I felt you should be aware of the impact such programs have had on our northern communities. I grew up in Prince George and still remember the excitement in the dental community when there was now a dental hygiene program available in the north. Twenty five years ago, I moved from Prince George to Fort St. John. At that time, I was the only private-practice dental hygienist in the...

CNC students looking for scrubs

With spring cleaning on the way, health professionals are once again being asked to donate their gently used uniforms, which will then be sold, with proceeds funding CNC’s Making a Difference Bursary. Since 2011, sales from the scrub drive have funded bursaries of $250 each, which are given out annually to five CNC health sciences students in financial need. The scrub drive is organized by CNC nursing instructor Nancy Esopenko. “Over the last few years, the scrub sale has helped make...

Reasons to keep the dental program

Editor: It seems very ironic that I am writing this letter. My daughter told me about the possible suspension of the dental programs at CNC. I am writing this letter on behalf of parents in Prince George in light of this news. Twenty years ago my daughter was accepted to CNC to take the dental hygiene program. She was very excited, as this was a dream of hers that she had been working towards for many years. However the problem was she was from the Lower Mainland. She did not even really...

CNC now weighing budget input from Friday’s public meeting

The dental programs and counselling services at the College of New Caledonia presented their numbers to the board of governors Friday. Now the decision is whether those numbers will trump the budget numbers the board is working on. Because of the amount of feedback received on proposals to suspend student intakes on dental programs and eliminate a number of counselling positions, the board decided not to make its decision at the Friday meeting, but to postpone the vote until the April 24...

A living book

When you reach rock bottom you still have farther to fall. Just ask Dr. Eric Weissman. What once was his worst nightmare turned into his greatest asset, he said. The humbling experience of being a destitute, drug addict who eventually became homeless gave him the knowledge, courage and determination needed to help others find a better path in life. He’s interviewed and filmed dozens of people for documentaries about people’s struggles on the streets. Today the 54-year-old professor of...

Educators’ group calls on CNC to reverse proposal on stopping intake programs

Cindy Oliver will have one message for the College of New Caledonia Board of Governors this afternoon. “When programs are cut,” the president of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of B.C. says, “the students end up suffering.” Oliver will be one of the presenters at a special forum called by the board to get public input on a proposal to suspend student intakes into some programs to help meet this year’s budget. The vote on the matter was supposed to be at today’s board meeting, but...
