He writes some of the hottest science fiction on the market and his novel Flash Forward has become one of the season’s most-watched television series.
Still fame and financial success has not replaced Robert Sawyer’s discipline and daily regime of churning out words.
“My goal is 2,000 words a day and I stick to that whether it takes me two and a half hours of 12 hours,” Sawyer told the Free Press. The Ottawa-born author who credits T.V. shows from his youth like Search and Star Trek with his passion for science fiction has 20 published novels and has won over 40 awards for fiction.
He will be at Books and Company May 25, reading from his book Watch, the second novel in his WWW Trilogy about the world wide web.
“The first book Wake has just come out in paperback and the passage I will be reading from Watch can stand alone, so it’s not necessary to have read the first novel to understand it,” Sawyer said.
One of Canada’s most acclaimed authors, Sawyer has been writing for the better part of his life.
“I began writing short stories as a little kid,” he said, “and I sold my first magazine article at age 19. It was called The Contest and it was a fantasy about a pact made between God and the Devil.”
Sawyer concedes it’s not easy making a living as a writer and certainly not the profession for the faint of heart.
“If you love anything else, do that – because it’s easier. I’m lucky in being able to make a good living at what makes me happy. I have been a professional writer since the age of 24 – and I just turned 50. So that’s more than half my life.”
The award winning author is on a 14-city book tour across Canada. Robert Sawyer will visit Books and Company on Third Ave. for a reading, question and answer session and book signing on Tuesday, May 25 starting at 7 p.m.
