A year of experience can make all the difference. The Lakewood Junior girls Lakers finished second at the North Central zones last year. This year with a returning core of eight players head coach Ray Bourque is looking for a first place finish.
After two weeks of play the Lakers are undefeated with a 7-0 record.
It could be. We’re looking really strong this year. We’ve got a really good mix of eight returnees from last year. They are applying what they learned last year at zones and provincials,” said Bourque. “They are working really hard.”
The Lakers defeated the Prince Rupert Rainmakers was 42-34. Emily Kaehn had 24 points and Kasey Reiter 13 points.
“I think that’s our biggest asset,” said Bourque. “Our team can play with anyone. We were up by 16 points and I pulled the press off and they came right away. They got within 10 points with five minutes left. They made us work for it.
“They had two girls who just heat up they scored about 20 points each.”
Bourque said the team’s asset is its experience.
“They are all playing in different positions expect the point guard position,” said Bourque. “We’re trying to work up their different skills. Our biggest skill is working on our defence.”
The team will be traveling to Kamloops in January for a tournament at Westsyde.
The Lakers have three players from the U14 Summer Games team that finished sixth.
