Renowned conservation leader David Suzuki will be the guest of honour at an anti-oil rally set for this Saturday in Kitamaat Village.
The rally and all-Nations feast focused on stopping the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project will be held May 29.
Presentations will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and the rally will continue all day until a feast set for 4:30 p.m. Traditional First Nations dancing will follow at the Haisla Recreation Centre.
Village councillor Gerald Amos said the rally coincides with beginning of the “season of harvest” for First Nations peoples.
It has been dubbed a chance for local citizens to understand why their leaders have taken an anti-pipeline stance.
The Haisla and Gitga’at Nations have invited residents from across the Northwest to attend the traditional gathering and reaffirm the community’s commitment to stopping the pipeline project.
Besides Suzuki, other presenters include stand-up paddler Norm Hann, who just completed a 385-km expedition along the proposed coastal oil tanker route, and with Dr. Riki Ott, an Alaskan marine biologist who saw first-hand the devastation of the Exxon Valdez and recent Gulf spill.
Suzuki has been working to raise environmental awareness about the other end of the proposed pipeline, regarding the Alberta oil sands.
