Bantams hosting tough competition

Coming into Friday’s game, the Prince George Curtis Elite Female Cougars knew it was going to be an intense weekend.
The Cats are hosting the first Annual Curtis Elite Female Midget Tournament at the Kin Centres which wraps up today with the final game at 10:45 a.m.
The Cougars started the weekend off with a 2-1 loss against the Abbotsford Hawks on Friday afternoon.
Cougars coach Chris Kaban was pleased with his team’s play to open the tournament, which also has the Prince George Blades and Prince George WIC Bantam Female Cougars taking part.
“I thought it was a good effort by the girls. We just couldn’t seem to put the puck into the net. But the girls had some good chances. We had a couple of unfortunate breaks,” said Kaban whose team has been improving as the season continues.
“There were a lot of penalties and it made it tough to get any flow to the game. All in all it was good start to the weekend. I thought that Abbotsford is a good team and they didn’t have a lot of weak links out there and hopefully we will get to meet up with them again.”
The Hawks opened the scoring early in the first with Angie Friesen scoring her first of the game. The Cougars were able to tie things up in the second with Katie Spencer’s unassisted goal.
“We’ve seen Vernon, Kamloops and Salmon Arm. They are all good teams and I don’t think we’ll have any easy games all weekend,” said Kaban. The Cats played in a pool with the Hawks, Kamloops and Whitehorse.
“We’d like to win. There are some really good teams in this tournament. There isn’t going to be an easy game for us all weekend.”
Friesen put the winner past Cats goalie Brittany Lockhart late in the third period. Cougars captain Carrie Fjellgaard said it was tough start to the weekend, but said seeing the competition is good for the team.
“The season started off a little slow. In our first tournament we came second to last and then we started to come together and we won our second tournament against Vernon 1-0 in the final. We’re slowly coming together as a team,” she said.
“We’re going to be at provincials for sure because there was only one team in the zone. So it’s nice to see what to expect.”
The final will be played in Kin 1.
