COLUMN - Fashionably green council

With municipal elections coming just over a year from now, we can expect those who hope to win, or retain a seat on council, to begin seeking greater public awareness of them and their positions. One of the interesting things to watch is who will try to become Mr. or Ms. Green. The environment remains a hot issue and is unlikely to diminish in importance for most voters. It is just too big a political plum to pass by. Being green beats apple pie, motherhood and kindness to small children.

Keeping the memory alive

Italy, March, 1978 -- Just before reaching Ortona on the Adriatic coast of Italy, one comes to the Moro River Canadian War Memorial Cemetery. On the highland, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is the final resting place of 1,615 Second World War soldiers. One thousand, three hundred seventy five of these casualties are Canadian; almost a quarter of the Canadians killed in the Italian Campaign.

Difficult choices have to be made

As the effort to diminish the production of carbon dioxide moves forward, a serious look will be taken at energy sources, other than fossil fuels. It is generally agreed that carbon dioxide build-up is the principal reason for global warming. As the warming has more impact, perceptions will change.

Metered response to parking

The members of city council are going to have to make a tough decision on the implementation of the transportation and parking recommendations produced by their consultants, Opus Hamilton. The recommendation to do away with the one way streets on Second and Fourth Avenues is unlikely to be very contentious. The recommendations of parking revisions could cause a lot of controversy.

Poverty is everyone’s problem

We pass them almost every day. We pass them and then forget them, unless they approach us for some change. We don't even remember them, moments later. These are the homeless and the disenfranchised citizens of our city. They are ones who do not share in the good life, as most of us do.

Enjoying the hunt

Fall doesn't really arrive until Thanksgiving Day. Despite the changing leaves and shorter days, hope lingers within us that there is still time to get in a few more summer activities. On those fortunate days when the sun shines, there is hope that fall, and its successor winter, are still some time off in the future. There is time for a few more rounds of golf, hikes or whatever other summer activities we enjoy.

Politically incorrect not right

If ever there was a case for a mercy killing it should be the killing of political correctness. This creeping disease that has infiltrated and tainted our society has only one objective: Make all of us think and speak in one manner and one way. It is a dangerous threat to the ideal of free opinion and the freedom to express those opinions. I for one am a little weary of the ongoing efforts to make you and I speak and think in one manner.
