On the buses

Editor: I wish to personally thank the UNBC students who came up with the brilliant idea of free bus rides for the duration of the 2015 Canada Winter Games., and to all the business and just plain folk who backed the idea financially. It worked so well. During one of my trips to town, a young mother and her three-year-old daughter got on the bus. As they trotted down the aisle this adorable child, golden curls peeking out from under her hat, cheeks rosy red from the cold air and the...

Cougars season comes to an end

By Dan O’Connor Prince George Cougars The Prince George Cougars can hold their heads high. They gave the Victoria Royals all that they could handle, and then some. But their first playoff series in four years came to an end Saturday night in Victoria in dramatic fashion. The plucky Cougars erased a 3-1 and a 4-3 deficit, and tied the game with 1:14 left to force overtime. But Brandon Magee ended the series 1:42 into the extra frame to lift Victoria into the second round. Zach Pochiro...

The Beautiful Game meets up with Easter eggs

A crafts project that got fumbled, led Rose-Marie Prokopchuk into a new venture. On Saturday, her unique Easter eggs found favour with visitors to Saturday’s annual Easter bazaar at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Along with traditionally decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs (Pysanky) the senior included her latest venture into creativity – eggs decorated to look like soccer balls, footballs and baseballs. Inspired by her six grandchildren who all take part in sports, Prokopchuk said...

Not all about First Nations

Editor: I suggest (Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart) Phillip ask himself that question (Is this man a terrorist, Free Press, March 13), without the bias of being First Nations. You are correct sir, you are not a terrorist because of your beliefs. Chaining yourself to a tree or putting up a blockades also are not acts of terrorism, so why must you believe what this bill “really” is? If you care and respect this land then don’t make everything about your people....

Save dental programs

Editor: We, the Northern British Columbia Dental Hygienists Society are writing this letter in response to the CNC executive’s recommendation to suspend the dental assisting and dental hygiene programs. Like many others who heard this news, we were stunned by such a thought. These programs have brought much needed oral health education and employment to the north. As a society of more than 140 dental hygiene members from the north, almost all of us were educated at CNC over the past 28...

Included in those who have sat in the gallery every day are Ronda Roche, Glenn Roche’s widow, and Greg Stewart, CEO of the Sinclar Group, Lakeland Mills parent company. Ronda Roche testified on the first day of the inquest and Stewart was the last on the stand before it adjourned Wednesday. “This incident was awful for all of us. This has been a very, very tough event...
