CNC suspends dental program intakes, but offers ray of hope

Allan Wishart Free Press The dental assistant program at the College of New Caledonia may not skip a beat. While the school’s board of governors voted Friday morning to suspend student intakes for the dental assistant and dental hygiene programs to balance the 2015-16 budget, the recommendation from vice-president of administration and finance Sue McAllister contained a measure of hope, which president Henry Reiser elaborated on in discussions before the vote. “We have been in...

Ian Tyson returns to Prince George for show June 6

Canadian music legend Ian Tyson will bring his songs and stories to Vanier Hall in Prince George on June 6. Tyson, who turned 81 last fall, is showing no signs of slowing down. Between his ranch in the foothills of the Rockies and his music, he finds ways to keep busy. In the past 10 years, he has released four albums, put out a two-disc concert video and filmed a music documentary for Bravo. Oh, and he also wrote his autobiography, The Long Trail: My Life in the West and did some touring....

Pulling the plug on dental program would leave a bad taste

I feel like I’m in the dentist’s chair. Waiting in suspended silence with my dry mouth draped and dammed. I can’t talk. Every attempt to speak is blocked by warm black latex and muffled by the hiss of a suction tube. The anticipation is the worst part. I know this latest session is likely to put me in at least some pain no matter how much freezing goes into my gums or roof of my mouth. I’ve decided that I have sensitive teeth. Or maybe I’m just sensitive. The dentist is off in another...

Blame Victoria for cuts at CNC, NDP spokesperson says

It was a busy couple of days in Prince George for Kathy Corrigan this week. “I was at the forum on public education on Monday,” the NDP spokesperson for advanced education said on Tuesday. “I spoke with a lot of people there, then I had a meeting this morning with the local board of education. It as a great meeting I’m really impressed with the quality of the trustees here.” The main reason for Corrigan being in Prince George was just that – to talk to people about education. “The messa...

Education forum told of challenges northern B.C. schools face

Prince George was the first of what Kevin Rose hopes will be a series of forums on public education in B.C. Rose, the provincial K-12 coordinator for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), was one of the speakers at a forum Monday evening at the College of New Caledonia. “It was a very good crowd,” he said. “It was a diverse crowd. There were school trustees, excluded staff from some of the schools. It wasn’t just a CUPE thing, it was a public gathering.” And what they heard from...

Prince George bowlers no strangers to Nationals

Doing an interview with the four girls who make up the senior bowling team representing B.C at the Nationals in Oshawa, Ont. is like interviewing a single person. A question thrown out to Paige Meise, Lezzyl Aquino, Kassidy Johnson and Megan Reimer is usually answered by all four at the same time. Coach Chito Tecson says that singularity of purpose makes his job a bit easier. “They know each other’s styles so well,” he said during a recent practice at Black Diamond Lanes, the home lane for...

Kennedy Heitman is devoted to the dance

Kennedy Heitman, 16, doesn’t need a line from Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It, to tell her that “all the world’s a stage.” For her, it really is. Heitman loves performing a wide variety of dance routines from ballet to hip hop, especially for a live audience. Introduced to dance at aged three, after just a few lessons at Judy Russell Enchainement Dance Centre, Heitman told her mother: “I want to be up there dancing on stage one day.” Since then Heitman has studied ballet, tap, jazz,...
