Long track speed skating moved to Fort St. John

Mother Nature just isn’t cooperating with long track speed skaters at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Warm temperatures have forced organizers to implement a contingency plan and send 63 speed skaters and support staff to Fort St. John and use the indoor ice oval there. “Exceptional athlete experience is our No. 1 pillar,” said Stuart Ballantye, CEO for the Games, adding that after a great day of racing on Sunday temperatures just aren’t cold enough to repair the oval. That led to the...

UNBC Discovery Centre exposing young minds to science

A unique project taking place at UNBC’s Prince George campus during the 2015 Canada Winter Games will demonstrate the fun of science to young minds. The UNBC Discovery Centre will provide interactive, hands on activities, and tours of academic and research facilities to young people and their parents. Tossing rocks from the Rock

For most of the year, Andrew Taylor and the other three members of the Newfoundland and Labrador men’s curling team at the Canada Winter Games are on opposite sides of the sheet. “Those three are my competition in St. John’s,” the skip said after opening pool play with an 11-5 win over the Northwest Territories on Sunday afternoon. “We all know each other, so it’s working out.” The situation came about because of the way Newfoundland and Labrador...

Skating through the pain

Bethany McKinley-Young may have finished 15th in her first race at the Canada Winter Games on Sunday, but just the fact she was skating at this level is remarkable. “The summer after Grade 8,” the Ottawa skater said after the 1500 metre race, “I was still training hard, and I started feeling pain in my knees, but I kept going.” The pain got worse when the skating season started, and spread to her whole body. “I felt exhausted. I was having trouble finishing...

Taking a shot at art

Unabashed pride in her niece’s athletic achievement has inspired artist Mary Mottishaw to create a new work of art. Her mixed media acrylic piece entitled Claire Keeps her Eye on the Target is on display at Two Rivers Gallery, dedicated to biathlon Claire Lapointe, one of four Prince George biathletes who was named to Team B.C. to compete in the 2015 Canada Winter Games. “When the call for artists came out, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to honour Claire’s...

Burns Lake’s Emily Dickson wins bronze in biathlon

Northern B.C. had its first athlete take the podium on Sunday when Emily Dickson earned a bronze in 12.5 km biathlon event. Dickson wasn’t the only Team BC athlete to win a medal on day two of the competition. Sara Spence took silver in the women’s 1500m long track speed skating event and B.C.’s freestyle skiers had the best kind of deja vu possible at the Canada Winter Games. Elena Gaskell of Vernon and Sofiane Gagnon and Teal Harle, both from Whistler, racked up more hardware. They...
