Dismal road trip for Cougars

It was not a good weekend for the Prince George Cougars, on or off the ice. After losing to the Kootenay Ice 7-4 on Sunday, wrapping up three losses in three games on the road, the Cougars boarded the bus to head home. “We started home,” coach Mark Holick says, “and they had the highway closed. We had to loop all the way back around. “What is normally a nine-hour trip turned into 17 hours.” The team got back to Prince George about 11 p.m. Monday, which meant...

Warm weather means pothole patrol is out

The January heat-wave has Prince George residents feeling like spring is in the air. Whether spring has actually arrived, no one knows for sure. But what has arrived, which usually coincides with spring, is pothole season. Crews with the City of Prince George have been working on three shifts to patch potholes uncovered by the recent unseasonably warm temperatures and rainfall. In order to patch a pothole, crews must first clear the hole of water and debris. “Cold mix” patching material is...

Babine mill explosion inquest separated from Lakeland inquest

Even though there are similarities, two separate mill explosions require two different inquests. That has been the suggestion of many involved in the Babine Forest Products explosion in Burns Lake in January 2012 and the Lakeland Mills explosion in Prince George a couple of months later. It is now the position of Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe, who today announced there will be two inquests. In August she had announced that deaths from the two explosions would all be examined in a single...

Lexicon of the North at Rustad Galleria

A new exhibit, A Lexicon of the North, opens Thursday. A Lexicon of the North is the result of their exploration of living in the North as a teenager in the 21st century. In November, Two Rivers Gallery curatorial staff asked teenagers living in Prince George to answer the question: What does it mean to you to live in the North? “Teens were given the opportunity to freely look at the world around them and capture it through the eyes of a disposable camera,” said assistant...

My golden opportunity to meet a bronze medallist

Toller Cranston was by all accounts, a beautiful and eccentric human being. In his own words, “I’m an original, dahling.” It was uncanny, really. On Saturday I went to cover an artists’ chair painting event at the Groop Gallery. After taking my photos, I was talking with gallery owner Melanie Desjardines about one of our favourite subjects – Toller Cranston, who had returned to his first love, painting, after retiring at age 50 from professional figure skating. We...
