The organization behind Toopy and Binoo

Behind every successful family show is a good writer, director and choreographer. Patti Caplette is all of those. Now she brings local audiences some of her most popular, fun and colourful characters to the CN Centre Oct. 23 with a new show: Toopy and Binoo: Fun and Games. Caplette spoke with the Free Press on Thursday. “The premise of the show is that it forces our imagination – my imagination in creating it – to see how far we can push the envelope with characters and story line. So...

Cards keep Loren Leslie’s memory alive

Donna Leslie, mother of Loren Donn Leslie, has a unique way of keeping good memories of her daughter close at hand. She had a deck of playing cards made up with images of her daughter taken from family photographs of happy times in her life, from infancy through childhood and early teenage years. It is Leslie’s way of trying to deal with the cards life has dealt her – the brutal murder in 2010 of her beautiful 15-year-old daughter at the hands of serial killer, Cody Legebokoff. Now that the...

Program named in honor of Cyntha Maas

The legacy of Cynthia Maas, 35, who was brutally murdered in 2010 by a young serial killer, Cody Alan Legebokoff, 24, lives on in a place of refuge for women called Cindy’s Haven. Maas, lived at various times at AWAC, a downtown shelter for women. Diane Nakamura, executive director of Association Advocating for Women and Children (AWAC) for the past two years, said Cindy’s death affected everyone who lived there. “Cindy had been living here when she went missing (in late August or...

Third Avenue Planter boxes changed due to criminal activity in area

Prince George RCMP and the crime prevention through environmental design committee have identified planter boxes on Third Avenue as areas of high criminal activity. Based on recommendations, the City of Prince George will continue safety upgrades to the downtown core by eliminating planter boxes on Third Avenue between George Street and Dominion Street. Safety improvements to these areas will commence next week. “The Prince George RCMP informed city administration that these planter boxes...

Cariboo Cougars put undefeated string on the line this weekend

The Cariboo Cougars will put their undefeated record on the line this weekend as they host the Greater Vancouver Canadians at Kin 1. Both teams are off to hot starts offensively, with Canadians’ Kyle Uy leading the league with 11 points in four games, but three Cougars - Darren Hards, Steven Jandric and Austin Gray- all occupying top eight spots in league scoring. Jandric and Gray, who both have four goals and three assists, are rekindling a connection that began when both were...

Council should be very, very angry

There were a lot of irate city councillors around town this week. They were, and rightly so, extremely upset that the city laid off 11 workers and city council wasn’t kept in the loop. Lyn Hall told me he heard about the layoffs when he was watching a soccer game. Others heard about the layoffs when the media started calling asking about them. Something went seriously amiss at city hall last week. Most are looking at city administrator Beth James. I don’t believe for a minute that James...
