Koehler seeking second council term

Albert Koehler is seeking a second term on city council. The incumbent announced his plans Friday afternoon. Koehler says he has worked closely with post-secondary education institutions regarding programs and successfully lobbied for more innovation and diversification, during his three years on council. He has campaigned to reign in municipal tax increases and last year was successful in having council limit the tax increase to 2.5 per cent, however a push this year for 1.5 per cent...

Cody Legebokoff - The Alpha-bet man

For three months, I have been within a few metres of a cold-blooded killer. A chilling thought. I have never given that term much thought before. Maybe because I’ve never been so close to anyone who truly fits the description. Then I found myself sitting in courtroom 104 taking notes in the trial of Cody Alan Legebokoff. A Conservative education

One of the problems of being the leader of a party with no MLAs is that, even if you have some good ideas, it’s hard to get anyone to pay attention. BC Conservative leader Dan Brooks was in Prince George last week and drew only a handful of people to listen to his solution to the teachers’ dispute. Heck, half the media in town didn’t even show up. But Brooks had some good ideas, presented, of course, before this week’s tentative deal. The first thing that Brooks said he would do, if...

Teachers vote 86 per cent yes to new deal

B.C. teachers have voted strongly in favour of ending their strike and returning to work next week. B.C. Teachers’ Federation members voted 86 per cent in favour of a six-year agreement negotiated with the help of mediator Vince Ready this week. About three out of four of the province’s 40,000 teachers voted. “I’m happy with this deal,” said BCTF president Jim Iker. It gives the province’s teachers raises totalling 7.25 per cent over six years,...

Spruce Kings set for showcase

Dave Dupas sums up the week ahead for the Prince George Spruce Kings quite simply. “We’re still a work in progress,” says the head coach of the BCHL team, “but I’m happy with the progress we’re making.” The team lost its first two exhibition games to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, but rebounded on the weekend with a pair of good games against the Vernon Vipers, losing 4-3 in overtime in Vernon on Friday and playing to a 4-4 overtime tie at the Coliseum on Saturday. “We’re starting to get some...
