Roller Girls wreck Wreckers

For some of the Rated PG Roller Girls roller derby squad, it was their first road trip as a member of the team. For a couple, it was their first bout of the season. For all of them, it was the thrill of victory after a trip to Kamloops on the weekend. “It was an amazing game,” Sistah Viberosis (aka Denise Hogue) said after the Roller Girls Grey team downed the Kamloops Wreckers 225-106. The girls really brought it. The exceeded my expectations.” Viberosis has been coaching the Grey team...

Dhaliwal works with children in Nicaragua

Not surprisingly, Rameeta Dhaliwal has already made friends in Nicaragua. The gregarious – not to mention gorgeous – local woman, a national finalist in the Miss Universe Canada pageant held in Toronto recently, says she feels happy to be making a difference in the lives of children in her work in Nicaragua. She is part of a Humanitarian Tour representing Miss Universe Canada which runs June 18 to July 2. (See Free Press story June 20.) Her fundraising campaign brought in $25,157 for...

Farmer’s Market on the move

The Saturday morning trips to the Farmer’s Market in Prince George will now be a little different. The Farmer’s Market will be the same, it just won’t be on the steps of the provincial courthouse. At a recent special meeting the members have decided to unite the market and to set up at a single location only. The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of moving all vendors to the year-round location at Sixth Avenue. After losing the indoor location in the former Morrison...

Totem takes a trip

A totem pole arrived in Prince George on Tuesday evening, bound for Edmonton. The pole, carved by Haida carver Ben Davidson, is being accompanied from Masset, Haida Gwaii to Edmonton by about 30 bicyclists. “I was on a bike tour a few years ago,” says Edmonton Journal columnist Nick Lees, as the group stopped at the Gathering Place at UNBC for a meal, “and when we got to Haida Gwaii, I saw these magnificent totem poles. “I knew we needed to get one of those to Stollery.” Stollery...

Halls of power

If you’re judging by launch crowds, Lyn Hall has the edge in the mayor’s race. He drew a slightly bigger crowd for his mayoral announcement than competition Don Zurowski. However, both did well – Hall had about 100 while Zurowski drew about 75. The crowds, however, were different. Zurowski’s crowd could most easily be described as the business community. The crowd out to see Hall’s announcement was a little more diverse. Lots of school district folks who worked with Hall when he was school...

Home for rent - bad tenants, drug dealers need not apply

Somehow, don’t ask me how, the channel changer went numb, refusing to budge from the local city council meeting. I saw this as a sign not just to change the device’s battery but also to stay tuned to our local government at work. The revisited issue was whether landlords, big and small, should be required to have a business license in the case of owning two or more rental suites. Touted as not just a revenue-bearing vehicle for the City but also a “tool” to assist landlords in the event...

Things have changed

British Columbia Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Jody Wilson-Raybould calls it a game-changer. She is absolutely right. The Supreme Court of Canada, in a unanimous decision yesterday, granted declaration of aboriginal title to more than 1,700 square kilometres of land in British Columbia to the Tsilhqot’in First Nation. The decision overturns a 2012 Court of Appeal decision that gave the Tsilqot’in the right to hunt, trap, and fish in the area but fell short of declaring title on...

Happy Canada Day

Next week we celebrate the birthday of our country. It is a country well worth celebrating. Canada is like no other country. It has changed since its birth in 1867 and how it has changed says much about Canadians, both in the past and in the present. We are an adaptable bunch and unusually fair-minded. While we share an extremely long border with the United States, neither country has ever felt compelled to build fortifications to protect ourselves from each other. That does not occur in...

LETTER: Editorial provided racist comment

Editor: I am dismayed, annoyed, and really bothered about your page 14 comments today. Whose idea was this and what was your aim? You overstepped your mark in a huge way (Free Press, June 23, Not worth the wait) with the paragraph: “Did it really take the federal government six months to determine it has nothing to add to the 209 conditions, other than tell Enbridge to offer affected First Nations some more beads and blankets.” Excuse me? How dare you insert such a racist comment? I think...
