His website Ship’s Blog page says Kieran W. Harrop was born in Ireland “but grew up in a logging community in Canada’s northern interior.” That is not far off course. Harrop grew up in Prince George and he has just launched his first book, Voyage to Destiny: Sailing to Success.
Ironically, the philosopher adventurer was “no sailor” when he first decided to embark on what became a seven year long voyage of self discovery.
“When I finished by degree in Philosophy, I realized I didn’t have any set goal for my life,” said Harrop. “I knew that I would have to set goals for myself in order to realize my dreams. For me, that meant fulfilling a childhood dream of sailing off to the South Pacific. So I set out from the west coast to the Caribbean in a 25 foot sailboat which is a very small vessel for taking out on the open South Pacific.”
For someone who’d never learned to sail, Harrop faced new challenges.
“I had no idea how to sail. I grew up in Prince George and never learned sailing. But then a friend took me out on his sail boat. After that, I wanted to sail and during my voyage, I read and researched and taught myself how [to sail]”.
And when Harrop returned to dry land, the sailor turned author knew what he wanted to do with his life.
“I used my voyage as a metaphor for life in writing my book. I was hoping to reach as many people as I could and share my ideas. The central theme of the book is easy to understand even if you’re not on the sea. There is an ocean of potential within each of us that is infinite.”
Life is like a voyage at sea, said Harrop, The analogy may not be new but the author believes he has found refreshing ways to express it.
“An authentic life realized to its fullest potential, is like a sailing voyage: you choose a destination, chart a course, weigh anchor and set sail on the seas of success.”
Harrop is the CEO of Target Success Enterprises, an inspirational speaker and success coach. His vocation and passion, he said, is to “help others realize their dream.” That, in part, is what his first book is about.
The rest is what you make it.
