Tatla Lake School wins provincial literacy award
Premier Gordon Campbell presents principal with award for the best literacy program in the province
The Tatla Lake School in the tiny Chilcotin community of the same name has received high praise for its literacy program.
Monday Premier Gordon Campbell presented principal Craig Munroe with a plaque for having the best literacy program in B.C.
School District 27 board chair Wayne Rodier and school superintendent Wayne Leckie were also on hand for the presentation.
“That was pretty special,” Rodier said Tuesday.
He said 94 schools had received nominations for six provincial awards that were presented in a ceremony at the legislature Monday to celebrate the start of Education Week. Two schools tied for awards, which meant eight awards in total were presented, he said.
Tatla Lake School was the only school to receive the literacy award.
“It is quite an honour to be singled out in the whole province as a school that exemplifies literacy,” Rodier says.
He said they would have liked to have representation from the parents or students to pick up the award but it is spring break in School District 27 and families have had other commitments.
“It’s wonderful to hear this. I am very proud of our little school,” Parent Advisory Council president Julie McMann said.
“The kids work really hard in this school. It is such a small rural school so it is very nice to be recognized.
Tatla Lake teacher Leslie Lamb says she learned about the award event late last week, but since it is spring break and people had other commitments there wasn’t time to send anyone from the community to Victoria for the presentation.
“I know there are a lot of innovative things going on at Tatla Lake School. It is a very small remote school and we click along very nicely,” Lamb said.
