UNBC Timberwolves recognize top athletes from past season

Franco Kouagnia and Sidney Roy were recognized at this years male and female athlete of the year at the Timberwolves annual athletic banquet on Friday evening. The two graduating players helped make UNBC history in one way or another. The UNBC Timberwolves presented their year end awards on Friday night at the Hart Crown Banquet Hall. Four student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements within the department, with additional awards for athletic achievement within each team....

Timberwolves honour top athletes

The UNBC Timberwolves are hosting their annual year-end banquet Friday, April 17. The banquet acknowledges all hard work put forth by the student throughout the year. This year two players have been nominated for each of the four department awards – female rookie of the year, male rookie of the year, female athlete of the year, and male athlete of the year. The 2014-15 season was a historic one for the Timberwolves. The men’s soccer team notched their first six point weekend with a double...

Timberwolves out of the playoffs

It was the longest season the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team has ever had in Canada West, mainly because it was the first time they made the playoffs. It came to an end on the weekend, however, with a pair of losses to the UBC Thunderbirds. “The guys battled hard,” coach Todd Jordan said of the two games in Vancouver, which ended in scores of 83-77 and 88-78. “It’s wasn’t the result we wanted, obviously, but it was a positive experience.” And with that, thoughts turn to next...

UNBC Timberwolves making a home on the road

Todd Jordan laughs when asked about being on the longest road trip in team history. “We’re trying to keep fairly active,” says the coach of the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team. “We’re using the weight room here, using some time for study hall.” The Timberwolves are spending this week and next in Kamloops, working out at Thompson Rivers University as they prepare for the first Canada West playoffs in school history. UNBC clinched second place in the Explorer Division with a pair of...

UNBC in playoffs, but questions remain

The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team knows they’re in the Canada West playoffs. And that’s about all they know right now. “If we take care of business,” coach Todd Jordan says, “we can finish second.” Or they can finish third. And they could ‘host’ a playoff series in Kamloops, or be on the road to any one of about seven different schools. The T’wolves clinched a playoff spot in the Pioneer Division when they split with division leaders University of Fraser Valley on the weekend at...

Timberwolves women look to final game of the season

It was a tale of two games for the UNBC womens basketball team on the weekend. Hosting the Fraser Valley Cascades in their final home games of the season at the Northern Sport Centre, the Timberwolves put up a good fight in the first game before falling 88-75, The second game, though, was all Cascades as the grabbed an early lead and coasted to an 85-51 win. “We couldn’t show our game in the second game,” UNBC coach Sergey Shchepotkin said. “Maybe the girls were so happy with their...

UNBC aims to clinch playoff spot

With two weeks to go in the Canada West men’s basketball regular season, Todd Jordan likes where the UNBC Timberwolves are. “We’re happy with controlling our own destiny,” the coach said after a weekend sweep of the MacEwan University Griffins at home on the weekend. “Being up two games in the playoff race with four games left is a good spot.” The Timberwolves are currently tied with Thompson Rivers University for second place in the Explorer Division with records of 9-7. Mount Royal is...

Timberwolves women’s team building for the future

Sergey Shchepotkin knew what he wanted at the beginning of the season. “I didn’t really expect a lot of wins,” the coach of the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team says. “I wanted to see the players increase the level of their skills this year.” Despite two losses on the weekend at home to the MacEwan University Griffins, he is seeing that growth. “We have been working on specific things as the year went along,” he said. “Now we are working on defence. “We want to be competitive, and...

UNBC ready for home openers

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team kept it tight for a while both nights against the Grant MacEwan Griffins on the weekend, but came up short in both games in Edmonton. “It was all right for us,” coach Sergey Shchepotkin said of the games. “Grant MacEwan is playing crazy good basketball right now. “We still need more experience and some luck to compete with teams like that.” It also didn’t help that Sarah Robin missed the two games on the weekend, but is expected back for games...

Women’s UNBC Timberwolves get first win

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team is heading into the holiday break with a victory. After losing the first game of their weekend doubleheader Friday night 72-58 to the visiting UBC-Okanagan Heat, UNBC rebounded with a 76-70 win on Saturday, their first of the Canada West season. Friday’s game was close at the half, with the Heat clinging to a two-point lead, but they outscored the Timberwolves by six points in each of the remaining quarters for the win. Sarah Robin was the only...
