Restaurant Guide

A long time ago, dating was a fairly easy process. With smaller communities, less mobility and more rigidly defined gender roles, there was more certainty about interactions between the sexes. Those days are gone. The freedom of the modern age has engendered some trepidation about the roles that couples should play when dining out. Here are a few suggestions to make that first date turn into a second.
These days, it is generally accepted that whoever did the asking, is responsible for paying. That is often the man, but women shouldn’t expect to ask someone out and then get a free meal.
If you have done the asking, it’s a good idea to get an idea of what your date likes and doesn’t like. Do they love Thai food and have a favorite place? Do they detest pub grub? This will give you some parameters when you begin to look for the perfect restaurant. Think about presenting several options-at least three-in different price ranges. That way, they will have some choice in the matter and you can get an idea about the costs. If you are going somewhere that is busy, be sure to make reservations.
Be careful about drinking alcohol on the first date. You don’t want to become inebriated and be unable to pay attention to your date. When your food comes, eat slowly and take small bites so that you can continue the conversation. Be aware that your date will pay attention to how well you treat and tip the wait staff. Fifteen percent is a reasonable tip to leave, and you should consider more if you have had exceptional service or an excellent meal.
Dating and dining can be stressful in the modern age, but good manners, a little foresight and excellent communication can ensure that your first date is successful.
