The latest unworkable solution from the federal Liberals came Thursday morning.
The party plans to ban ownership of handguns in Canada, in order to stop rising gun violence.
Sounds great, doesn’t it? That’s what the Liberals figure. They know it will sound attractive to people in urban and suburban areas, particularly in Toronto and Vancouver, where rising gun violence is taking a horrific toll.
There’s only one problem. The guns used in the violence on the street aren’t being legally imported into Canada, nor are they “owned” or registered. Thus the ban will not change anything.
It will create another gun control bureaucracy, to go along with the current one which penalizes hunters and target shooters, but does nothing to stop criminals or those who want to pack a gun.
All the current bureaucracy does is irritate law-abiding people, and waste a lot of money that could be put to better purposes – such as stepping up patrols of the U.S. border. That’s where most illegal handguns come from.
Canada has had strict restrictions on handgun ownership and use since the 1930s.
Only people with legitimate purposes may own and shoot handguns. And the registry in place since then has worked well – registered handguns are almost never used in crimes, unless they are stolen. And that is a rarity.
However, the number of handgun shootings has risen dramatically in recent years. In fact, it seems to have gone up substantially since the Liberals started registering all guns.
The federal Liberals believe there is no problem too big that a bureaucracy can’t be created for. Unfortunately, Ottawa bureaucracies waste money and harass law-abiding citizens, while studiously leaving criminals alone.
This latest plan will be no different.
