Gladys McKay lives through the pain

There are many stories that come to the Free Press which show triumph over adversity, and, as reporters, we never fail to be inspired by them and we hope readers will be as well. Gladys McKay has lived in Prince George since 1952 when sidewalks downtown were still made of wooden planks, and when the hospital was located in the old army barracks. She remembers harsh winters back then with temperatures that dipped to 45 degrees below and with “snow so high that you couldn’t see out our...

Building the best body

It was just too tempting. For the first time in one year, bodybuilder Amber Gage got to eat a plate of poutines, and a slice of pizza – and six cupcakes. She had been in training for a figure bodybuilding show in Vancouver last week and on the weekend she had her first chance to eat “real food.” Diet, discipline and determination had gotten her where she wanted to be – on stage, pumped up and showing off her 129-pound body with muscles gleaming and – thanks to coach Cara Roberts –...

Wetland campaign gets financial help

Two new grants have provided a solid financial start to the 2015 Hudson’s Bay Wetland campaign. B.C. Nature, parent association of the Prince George Naturalists Club, and the B.C. Naturalists Foundation have repeated their 2013 grant of $2,000, providing a further $2,000 towards informational signage and community liaison. An unexpected grant of $2,500 was received via the Calgary Foundation. The anonymous source of the funding stated that it was “to help inspire the appreciation and...

Pin it on the Games

Cole Dawe is in awe Sunday as he looks over a vast array of colourful Games pins on display and available for trading. The pin trading event took place at the Commonwealth Building and there were lots of eager collectors eyeing up pins for their collection. Dawe, who only started collecting last week, already has a few dozen marching down his scarf. The Heather Park student says he wants to collect even more. That’s how “Krassi” of Vancouver got interested in the hobby, he says. “I began...

Taking a shot at art

Unabashed pride in her niece’s athletic achievement has inspired artist Mary Mottishaw to create a new work of art. Her mixed media acrylic piece entitled Claire Keeps her Eye on the Target is on display at Two Rivers Gallery, dedicated to biathlon Claire Lapointe, one of four Prince George biathletes who was named to Team B.C. to compete in the 2015 Canada Winter Games. “When the call for artists came out, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to honour Claire’s...

Ramping it up downtown

Prince George welcomes athletes and visitors to the 2015 Canada Winter Games but some downtown businesses will also be putting out the “welcome mat” for people in wheelchairs, mothers with strollers or the visually impaired with canes. Handy Circle Resource Society, a local organization that provides help for people with disabilities and special needs, has been working on a ramp project since 2011. On Tuesday, the ramps were installed at two downtown locations: Alison’s Embroidery and...
