Spruce Kings play Sunday and Monday

The Prince George Spruce Kings have rescheduled their weekend doubleheader with the Chilliwack Chiefs - and part of it is still one the weekend. With the threat of labour action by city employees, the Spruce Kings had cancelled the games, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The games will now be played Sunday and Monday. The Sunday game, a 7 p.m. faceoff at the Coliseum, will be the Drop the Gloves and Sock it to ‘Em game, where fans are asked to bring new gloves, socks and...

Lindsay Ell set to release first single

She’s toured as an opening act with Buddy Guy, Keith Urban and The Band Perry. Now, Lindsay Ell is getting set to release her first single. Is that the normal order of doing things in country music? Ell laughs over the phone from somewhere in Wisconsin. “I have learned nothing is normal in this business,” says the Calgary native, who will open for The Band Perry at CN Centre on Jan. 11. “That’s the beautiful part of it.” She was in Wisconsin on Tuesday...

Cougars back on the road

The weather changes things, even for teams playing indoors. The Prince George Cougars had been thinking about leaving Wednesday evening for their weekend road trip, but the changing snow conditions led them to leave Thursday morning instead. “We had planned on skating Thursday,” coach Mark Holick said, “but now we’ll be on a bus all day. We’ll get a skate in on Friday.” The three-game trip starts tonight (Friday) in Tri-City, continues Saturday in Spokane and wraps up Sunday in...

Zimmer defends Canada Post changes

Bob Zimmer Prince George-Peace River MP I understand the concern of many people across the region about Canada Post and their decision to phase out door-to-door mail service. But in the world of instant and electronic communication, there is simply not enough postage being paid to sustain the current model. Business needs to adapt in order to stay competitive when technology changes the landscape....

Lighting up for solstice

There will be lots of handcrafted lanterns to light up the night during this year’s Winter Solstice celebrations. Little elves and older ones too have been hard at work at Two Rivers Gallery recently, making paper lanterns in a different patterns and owl themes including colourful oil paper, paper owl and pin-pricked paper lanterns. The lanterns are being created at three Family Sunday sessions and will be used to help light the way for people during the Dec. 21 Winter Solstice Lantern...

Can’t keep paying

In what seems like a rare moment of lucidity, city council wisely let a bylaw that would charge a fee to secondary suite owners die on the table. It was the right thing to do and council should be commended for deciding against it. The issue, however, is indicative of a disturbing trend these days … user pay for everything. More and more we see governments adopting the mindset that the public they serve are a burden on the “business” of governing. The rationale behind the secondary suite...
