A Quesnel police officer has been charged with one count of assault.
Cpl. Steven Chin was called in off duty Dec. 16 as the datamaster technician to conduct a breath analysis on Tony Adams.
During the test in the detachment’s cell block, Chin and Adams exchanged words, during which Chin is alleged to have struck Adams once in the face with a closed fist.
The blow resulted in minor injuries to Adams.
The detachment was informed of the incident and an internal investigation was immediately ordered.
Dec. 21 Chin was placed on, and remains on, suspension with pay.
He appears in Quesnel provincial court for his first appearance Tuesday (today).
A parallel code of conduct investigation was also conducted by E Division Professional Standards Unit.
That investigation has been referred to the E division commanding officer for formal discipline.
The morning of the reported incident began at 2:50 a.m. when Quesnel RCMP responded to a single motor vehicle incident on Dragon Lake Hill on Highway 97 .
Police say the driver (Adams) is alleged to have interfered with emergency personnel at the scene who were attending to the passenger of the vehicle.
An investigator arrested Adams for for obstruction and was removing him from the scene when Adams allegedly attacked the officer, punching him in the face and then jumping on him.
A second officer at the scene deployed a Taser in the touch stun mode once on Adams.
He was then arrested and taken to the detachment.
The officer received non-permanent injuries to one eye and was off for two weeks.
Adams has been charged with impaired driving and assaulting a peace officer.
His trial is set for Nov. 19, 2008.
