The DP Todd Trojans didn’t make things easy on themselves at the North Central AA Senior Girls Zones championships.
The Trojans got behind the eight ball with their first game of the tournament dropping a 67-55 loss, in the double knockout draw. From there it was an uphill battle for the Trojans as they defeated Correlieu, Nechako Valley and Duchess Park to face off against the College Heights Cougars in the final.
The Trojans needed to win twice against the undefeated Cougars for the zone title. And that’s just what they did. The Trojans edged past the Cougars 58-51 in the first game before a 56-53 win in the final. And both times the Trojans had to come from behind in the second half.
“We didn’t have the lead until the fourth quarter in the first game,” said Zielke.
The Trojans were down by 16 at the half in the final before a strong third quarter. The Cougars were held to just two points and were down 39-36 heading into the final frame.
The tournament win was the sixth in a row for the Trojans.
“We couldn’t have picked a harder route. When we played CHSS in the first game we had already played four games,” said Zielke, who got a strong effort from the entire team. Paige Tschampa scored 20 points for the Trojans in the win. Zone most valuable player Erin Beckett had 24 in the loss.
The Trojans have a record of 28-4 this season.
Ashley Piggot [Duchess Park] was named the top defensive player for the tournament.
