The battle for city bragging rights will continue on Wednesday night at the College of New Caledonia gym when the DP Todd Trojans senior girls’ basketball team takes on the College Heights Cougars.
The two teams will battle for the Prince George High School City League final. The Trojans defeated the Duchess Park Condors 52-44 in the semi-final last Wednesday.
The Trojans are dedicating this season to Lauren Webb, the only Grade 12 player on the team.
“We’re going to play like it’s our last year for Lauren. Like we’re all in Grade 12,” said Paige Tschampa. She led the team in scoring against the Condors with 16 points.
The Trojans have been successful this season, though they are still looking for their first win against the College Heights Cougars.
“This is our whole goal at the start of the year. This is where we wanted to be. We wanted to be in the city finals. It would be great to win city finals but most important will be zones. I think I’d rather go to provincials,” said Webb.
In Wednesday night’s semi-final at Duchess Park the Condors took the early lead and where up 17-13 after the first quarter. The Trojans took the lead into the half 27-24 and were up by nine after three quarters 44-35.
“We always start off with a little bit of a shake and we get our selves into it and we get a lot better,” said Webb.
Trojans coach Dave Zielke said he’s happy with the progress the team has made recently.
“We’re peaking at the right time. Everyone worked hard and played hard,” said Zeilke.
“For us to progress to this part of the season speaks very highly about the group that I’ve got. This team never stops. You never worry about winning or losing; you know your going to get 100 per cent every game. The goal was to get to the city finals this year the other was to win zones. We’ve made one of our goals and we got one more to go.”
The senior girls final will get underway at 6 p.m. at CNC on Wednesday while the boys start at 8 p.m.
