I was honoured to participate in the Highway of Tears community symposium on Thursday, March 30. Words cannot convey how deeply moved I was by the experience.
I thank all of the families for sharing their grief, stories about their lost loved ones, and their frustrations. The resolve displayed by all in attendance was astounding and I thank everyone involved with making the symposium a reality.
I was pleased to announce my ministry’s contribution totalling $45,000. $20,000 goes directly to the costs of holding the symposium, while $25,000 goes to the Prince George Urban Aboriginal Commission; together in partnership it was decided that amount would be used to further the work identified at the symposium. That’s in addition to the $25,000 contributed by the Solicitor General.
I also personally thank Dan George, Mary Tee-Gee, Rena Zatorski, Chief Dominique Frederick and Lheidli T’enneh First Nation for the hard work they put in to bring us all together.
Without a doubt, this was the most powerful symposium I’ve attended in all my years as a cabinet minister. Mussi cho.
