As Nino Maletta lists off the work being done at the schools in the district this summer, it sounds like the summer to beat all.
“This is actually probably a normal summer,” the district’s general manager of construction says. “We’ve usually got 15 to 20 projects to work on, depending on how tenders come in. There’s a few others that are still waiting on funding, so we might get to them later.”
One of the more noticeable summer projects is in front of Prince George Secondary, with large mounds of dirt in evidence.
“We’re replacing the asphalt and drainage system,” Maletta says, “because they were getting old, and we’re also re-aligning traffic flows for people leaving after events at Vanier Hall.
“We did some of the work last year, we’re doing some more this year, and we’ll probably have some bits and pieces to finish up later.”
PGSS is also seeing safety work done on the stage elevator at Vanier Hall. Maletta says that project may not be finished until after the school year starts, but doesn’t think it will have an impact on classes.
“Most of the other projects, we’re on schedule now to finish on time.”
Among those other projects are redoing portions of the roofs at Central Fort George Traditional School and South Fort George Elementary, and working on the parking lot and drainage systems at College Heights Secondary.
Other exterior projects include putting shutters on windows at Morfee Elementary in Mackenzie to help fight vandalism, working on the exterior fascia at Vanway Elementary, resodding the fields at D.P. Todd Secondary, and finishing the work on the bus lane at Kelly Road Secondary.
Maletta says they’re also expecting the two modular classrooms for Giscome Elementary to arrive this week for installation.
Inside the schools is just as busy, ranging from a wall upgrade in the gymnasium at Blackburn Elementary and replacing the gym floor at College Heights Elementary to improving the acoustics in the gym at Foothills Elementary. The kitchen cabinets in the home economics area at John McInnis Secondary are being replaced, upgrades to the handicapped entry systems at John McInnis Secondary and Glenview Elementary are being made, fume hoods in the science labs at Kelly Road secondary are being replaced, and the heating and ventilation systems at Vanway Elementary and Beaverly Elementary are being upgraded.
