Re. “Pair starts petition on Pitt River Rd. traffic” and “Ignoring the problem” (The Tri-City News, Feb. 9).
I totally agree with Wendy Sankey, Sue Walton and David Somerset regarding trucks on Pitt River Road. It is not a local traffic and things will get even worse.
I have been living off the southeast stretch of Pitt River Road (between McLean and Mary Hill bypass) for the past 10 years and noticed unbelievable traffic increase.
Yet our city representatives want to built the Coast Meridian Overpass, which funnel northeast Coquitlam residents through PoCo to a jammed Mary Hill Bypass.
Of course, all commuters and commercial truck drivers will immediately start using rat running techniques to reach the bypass and Highway 1 once the overpass will be built.
Right now, it is not uncommon to be unable to leave PoCo and get to the freeway for an hour or so during rush hour.
What we really need here in PoCo (and Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge) is a rapid transit, SkyTrain (or a subway) running all way on Lougheed to at least Coquitlam Centre, then another branch running from Coquitlam Centre in front of Riverview Hospital to Braid or Lougheed Mall SkyTrain stations. We should also close PoCo to all heavy trucks.
