Spectra Energy is looking install a 700-metre long section of natural gas pipe under the Salmon River this summer.
Steve Henderson, Spectra’s manager of community and aboriginal relations, said once final issues with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are resolved, construction of the project should take six months.
“The Salmon River is moving through the flood plane,” Henderson said. “We believe we have a very good solution to address.”
Log jams and the meandering river pose a threat to Spectra’s mainline pipe system which runs north and east of Prince George, he said. Salmon River runs from north of Fort St. James to connect with the Fraser River north of Shelley.
A horizontal drilling system will be used to create a guide hole 20m underground, then the pipe will be fed through and connected to the existing pipeline, he explained.
