If only old furniture and collectibles could talk, Ann and Leo Anderson would have plenty to chat about with the ever-changing collections of antiques, artifacts and accessories that surround them.
The couple owns and operates Lake-view Home Furnishings at 20th Avenue and Victoria Street.
Treasures like an antique steamer travel trunk, oak dressers, old Singer sewing machine, bone china tea sets, 1970s sleek coffee tables and preowned comfy sofas all have histories. One customer was able to tell the owners about the dark blue steamer trunk with its divided drawers, clothes wardrobe and special places for valuables.
“This fellow came in today (Friday) and told us the history behind the trunk. He said the old Cariboo gold miners used to take all their belongings in them when they travelled by horseback to search to mining towns like Barkerville. We are always hearing interesting stories like that.”
Opened last spring, the shop has found its niche in the local market and provided a new career opportunity for the Andersons.
“We opened the shop in May 2009,” said Ann. “We’ve never done this kind of thing before but we really love it. We meet lots of interesting people in this business and we have found that for everything we bring in, there is always someone who likes or needs it.”
Right now the retro look is still popular with the younger generation and there is a return to timeless, all-wood pieces, says Ann. Good quality furniture is always in style but more so now when budgets particular for those starting out are more strained, she notes.
“There is an interest in good quality wood products that will last. Some people will take an older piece they find here and refinish it to their own taste just because of the quality. Whether they do it themselves or have it done professionally, they can get a nice piece for much less than it would cost new to get that kind of quality.”
Since opening the store, the Andersons have found people from all over the region come in to browse, shop and check out the new arrivals (they get regular shipments) and take home treasures.
“We get folks from places like Mackenzie, Quesnel, Chetwynd and all over the North. We’ve been really surprised at the amount of interest there is in pre-owned furniture. We carry some new things too.”
