Alleged gang member charged after midnight melee
Police have charged a 29-year-old man who they say is associated with the Independent Soldiers following a melee early Sunday morning.
An officer on patrol early Sunday morning found a group of people fighting near Third Avenue and Quebec Street. The group dispersed with one man being arrested and lodged in cells for causing a disturbance.
Other officers on patrol located a man, believed to be involved in the disturbance, who fled when an attempt was made to arrest him. Police say the man is a gang member. A foot chase ensued through the CN rail yard off First Avenue. CN Rail was asked to suspend its operations in the area for approximately one hour, for the safety of the police and the subject being pursued. The suspect, who continued to resist, was arrested with the assistance of a police service dog near Fourth Avenue and Edmonton Street.
Charges of escaping lawful custody and obstructing a peace officer are being recommended against Jesse Dayton Lockhart of Prince George. Lockhart also had an outstanding warrant for assault causing bodily harm and is known by police to associate with the Independent Soldiers street gang. The matter remains under investigation.
