Jazz singer Maureen Washington may have moved to Victoria but her heart is still with Prince George fans.
She’s in town Friday (tonight) to perform some of her soulful songs, old blues and jazz standards and originals at the Twisted Cork.
The Sassy Jazz and Blues Concert starts at 8 p.m.
Washington has five albums and hundreds of live appearances under her belt including the 2009 Victoria Jazz Festival. She has performed solo and with her swing, blues, jazz, funk band BOP while living in Prince George. She hosted a musicians’ showcase and taught jazz clinics.
Washington is a fan favourite with local events like Coldsnap and she returned last year to do a special evening concert of jazz and blues at the Treasure Cove Casino.
For the Aug. 6 local show, Washington plans to treat the audience to a variety of songs and tease them with selections from her new album set to be released in October.
The singer songwriter is also working on an all jazz standard album of her mom’s favourite songs. Anyone who’s been to a Maureen Washington concert knows her mom is always in the audience and the singer pays special tribute to the woman who gave her life and lungs.
Tickets to the Sassy, Jazz and Blues Concert are at the Twisted Cork, 1157 Fifth Ave. and Books and Co. Washington shares the stage with her brother Calvin, a talented drummer.
