Scott Thorpe is hoping his success continues when he steps onto the court for his third badminton tournament of the season.
The Grade 9 student at Kelly Road Secondary School will look to add the Prince George Badminton B Open title to his list of wins this weekend.
The PG Open will get underway today at the Prince George Civic Centre with mixed doubles at 5 p.m. On Saturday, singles play begins at 8 a.m. and doubles matches start at 1 p.m.
Thorpe is coming off a win at the BC Winter Games Qualifier and Northern BC Winter Games Qualifier, in the Under-16 division.
He began playing badminton when he was a Grade 6 student at Heather Park Middle School, where his mom works.
This weekend Thorpe will be competing in the under 16 division which is the biggest group for the two-day event with 22 entries.
I’m just going to have fun. It’s going to be nice playing some people that I haven’t played before,” said Thorpe.
Organizer Lisa Davison said this level of play has been getting better each year. She says his year’s under-19 division should be very competitive.
“The under 19 group this year is amazing. They have been playing since they were in grade eight there will be some really good matches,” said Davison, who is the coach for the Kelly Road team and the BC Winter Games zone team.
