The district awards program is provided by School District No. 57 for Grade 12 students.
During this economic downturn, School District No. 57 has experienced the cancellation of some annual awards, however there are some new ones this year. Students who win these awards depend on the award money to help them with post-secondary education.
Students applying for awards must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents (landed immigrants) at the time of graduation. The awards include both bursaries and scholarships. Bursaries are given to students who require financial assistance and who have maintained a satisfactory academic standing. Scholarships are awarded mainly for outstanding academic achievement. These awards not only bestow honour on students, but also bring them financial rewards which help offset expenses when continuing their education.
The awards are donated by individuals, service clubs and companies in Prince George, Mackenzie, McBride and Valemount, who wish to contribute to the post-secondary education of graduating students. There are many awards that are established by families and friends in memory of loved ones.
Within School District No. 57 there are also school-based awards established by donors. These awards are given by a specific secondary school to a graduating student from that school. Each of the high schools in School District No. 57 have their own school specific awards, aside from the awards in the District Awards Program.
School District No. 57 awards program is always happy to receive money to establish new awards for its graduating students. There newest awards established in November come from the Prince George Hindu Cultural Society and the Communication Energy Paperworkers Locals 1092 and 402 from Mackenzie.
Every award in the district awards program goes towards graduating students going on to post-secondary education.
