This is going to be one of those weekends that the Cariboo Cougars feel will be important. The Cats will play host to the Fraser Valley Bruins for a pair of games.
The Cougars are sitting in second place in the BCAHA MML standing and the Bruins are just two points behind them.
“Our goal every weekend at home is to win both games,” said Cougars coach Grant Williams. “We need to do that to give ourselves a little bit of cushion.”
The Cats are coming off a 1-0-1 weekend against the Vancouver Northwest Giants.
“We played fairly well, not as well as we could. Certainly it was nice to see the boys work extremely hard and get the tie in the second game. There are some very important games and teams and the Giants were one of those team. This weekend the Bruins are another one of those teams.”
The Cougars will be without Randall Groot this weekend. Groot suffered a concussion on the weekend. Justin Fillion will also miss the games with a separated shoulder. Bobby Major is still on the sidelines with mono.
Grant said the weekend series with the Giants was a test for the players, dealing with some frustrating situations.
“One of their players knocked into our goalie Damien Ketlo early” said Williams. “Damien didn’t come back into the game. The ref gave us a delay of game penalty when we were doing some paperwork before the first of the third period with the risk management after Groot went to the hospital. We were a little discouraged with some of the calls and non-calls in that game. We got the boys to keep their focus and eventually we got thing going our way.”
Saturday night’s game will be at 7:15 p.m. On Sunday it will be a 10:15 start. Both games at Kin 1.
The Cougars will be collecting donations of non-perishable food for the UNN during both games.
Following this weekend the Cats will prepare for the Midget Mac Hockey Tournament in Calgary beginning boxing day.
