Sometimes things happen for a reason. Country singer-songwriter Mike Gouchie believes this with all his heart and songwriting soul. If not for a horrific car crash last summer near Red Rock, Gouchie says he may never have set his sights higher and made big career moves. He’s glad he did.
Recently, the locally-based artist signed on with a top management team, his songs are spinning around the world (Bad Boys and Angels got international rave reviews) and his artist’s creativity level is in high gear. The country recording artist’s acting stint (actually he played himself) on the CMT documentary Plucked was a big hit.
His career has had its up and downs and is the subject of his new World Class album but some of the ups are collecting awards like CAMA’s Best Male Artist, Best Country Album and an 2006 NAMA nomination for Best Folk/Country Recording.
In an interview with the Free Press last week, Gouchie said that he looks at his accident like a wake-up call.
“Maybe my accident was a way of waking me up and saying okay, let’s get at this (music career) and do it 100 per cent, instead of 99 per cent. Let’s make a real go of it,” he said. “I really don’t think I would have been brave enough (before) to ask or involve some of the major people who are involved in this new record. I would have been a little scared.”
Gouchie was amazed by the show of support.
“To my surprise, everybody already knew who I was. They were like yeah, let’s do it. We’re in. It’s been an eye-opening thing for me. I didn’t realize so many people were on my side. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Success is coming at him fast and furious. Gouchie is flying high and sure he has a world-class World Class record in the making however, he’s still very grounded and taking one step at a time.
“Things are major and very exciting for me right now. Basically, what I’m doing this week is I want to put together this (July 12) show and fill in the people of Prince George on where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing for the past few years.”
People who heard the show Saturday will know a lot more about Gouchie and even more about the people who helped him put it all together in his life and his music.
“My last album got huge reviews,” he said. “I recorded it in Nashville with some of the heavier hitters in this business so that was very exciting for me.”
