Pay-as-you-drive insurance would offer something for most drivers, proponent Todd Litman argues.
In fact auto enthusiasts who love their cars most and collect lots of different ones might have the most to celebrate.
A car buff with five different vehicles could insure them all and drive a different one each work day at the same cost as insuring just one vehicle under the current system.
The most obvious beneficiaries would be people who need cars only occasionally such as seniors who drive less frequently or young urbanites who don’t need a car to get to work but want one for weekend recreation getaways.
Litman says paying by the kilometre would also be a tremendous help to the suddenly unemployed or struggling single moms.
“Right now that person is forced to make that terrible choice between feeding the family and paying for insurance,” he said.
Even truckers or other drivers who don’t choose the option would benefit, he said, because they’d battle less congestion due to reduced driving by participating motorists.
