Organizers with the 2011 World Baseball Challenge provided an overview of plans for next summer’s international men’s baseball tournament.
In 2009, teams from USA, Canada, Germany and the Bahamas took part and organizers are expecting more countries at the 2011 event.
Representatives have asked the Regional District to consider supporting a program that would provide tickets and transportation to underprivileged youth and community members from throughout the region to enable their attendance at the event.
Directors referred the matter to administration to look at options, and will further consider the request in the coming months,
Construction on the new sewer system for Summit Lake is nearing completion.
Directors received an update on the project and approved an additional $79,770 for additional engineering expenses to improve future operation and maintenance of the sewer system. The additional funds will go to support work like environmental monitoring of downstream wetland and inspections of pump and tank installations.
The system is expected to be operable during the winter of 2010/2011.
Arthur Hadland from the Peace River Regional District provided a presentation to Regional District Directors over concerns about the proposed Site C power project in the Peace River area.
In his presentation, concerns over agricultural impacts, damage to historical lands and alternate power sources were cited as some of the key issues.
A special-event license has been granted to organizers of the inaugural Northern Regional Pond Hockey Challenge.
The event is scheduled for January 14-16 at West Lake, and expected to draw as many as 900 people daily. The event will see men and women recreational teams compete on eight different rinks. The event is connected to a similar competition held in Rossland.
