Defying moral ethics that a reasonable, responsible and respectful government should have, the B.C. Liberals sealed their political fate with April 28th’s back-to-work legislation. Not only did they force health care workers back to work, they decimated their wages. Not being merely satisfied with that act, to exemplify and compound their hateful action against all organized labour, they made it retroactive and provided no cap on the employers’ ability to contract out union jobs to the private sector. The legislation translates to far less money flowing into local businesses who are already hurting, in turn causing cutbacks to their employees who will lose their ability to purchase goods and services, escalating the downward spiral of provincial economic loss.
Whose side was Pat Bell and Shirley Bond on? Definitely not Prince George’s. By voting in favour of their party they further crushed the hopes and dreams of all in our community. Instead of going after the federal government, whose cuts to provincial health care funding caused the problem to begin with, they chose to once again attack the livelihood of our friends and neighbors. To those in the local business community that support the current government, are you so blind that you cannot see how this government is hurting you? While it pains me to see lives of the local labour force destroyed by the irresponsibility of our government, it gives me untold delight to see BC Liberal supporters papering the windows of their now defunct businesses.
It is my opinion that, in the interest of insuring adequate care to patients, that a legislated back-to-work action may have – at some point – been justified. But that action should have been merely forcing people back to work while the employers and union negotiated a mediated settlement, and certainly should never have happened within 72 hours of the strike beginning or had anything to do enforcing unarbitrated wage or concession settlements. This action taken by the B.C. Liberals is disrespectful, an act of retribution for unions supporting the former NDP government and absolute proof that they lied about respecting the right of collective bargaining that they had promised prior to, and during, the last election. Their arrogance, deceit and irresponsibility will remain the benchmark for all totalitarian governments of the future. British Columbia has never had government so corrupt with hate, lies and scandal, and hopefully never will again.
